Letter to Greta: 7 Years Old

Grets,

Happy birthday, Miss G! Finally, it was your day. Yesterday you brought birthday cupcakes and Halloween pencils into your class, which you'd been so excited about. For birthdays, your teacher has every kid write a letter and draw a picture for the birthday girl/boy, which she binds together, so you came home with a lovely book of messages from your classmates.

Last night, we let you and Lucia open your presents from Gra and Pop-Pop, Bobby and Nina, and Aunt Katherine. Lots of American Girl stuff (I was tasked with picking out most of the gifts this year from the grandparents), which you both loved.

Then--finally--your birthday. Last night I put a new doll dress on Wee Wee and one of your small stuffed cats, and of course put a balloon in your room tied to your desk chair, and balloons at the kitchen table. You got up quite early this morning, and when everyone else got up we went downstairs so you could open your first presents of the day--an American Girl lasagna dinner set, and a long-awaited Rilakkuma in a pink sleeper. You requested pancakes for breakfast.

It was a cold and rainy day, but nonetheless we drove into the city for your birthday outing, to the Rilakkuma Store in Times Square. There was a platform piled with Rilakkumas for photo ops, and then you and Lucia picked out a few cute things, including a little set of Sumiko Gurashis dressed up as pieces of sushi (I can't even begin to explain this, sorry) and a few Rilakkuma office accessories (pen, notepad, eraser).

Next we went to a sandwich shop called Potbelly for lunch--for obvious reasons (ie, Greta's most cherished stuffed animal is my old Pot Belly Bear).

Then we made quick stops at Flying Tiger and Muji, and then we came home. (We also got a parking ticket, because Andrew put the parking receipt on the dashboard upside down.) You were so excited to open your presents, so we did that--you absolutely loved your things, which included: stuffed cat, Our Generation cat-care set with small cat, a doll school set, a cat-sweater outfit for your doll, Skip-Bo (a game), three books, a few pairs of earrings, Kitty in My Pocket set, and Furryville Catfields miniature plush things. All very cute and cat-focused. Then we sang, and you blew out the candles on your ice cream cake.

You had the rest of the afternoon to play with your new things, and the school set was definitely the focus. Later, we went out for sushi at Ariyoshi, your request for birthday dinner.

All in all a lovely birthday. You sad it was "cateriffic" and were sad that it was over. And now you're seven! All day yesterday you said you were "sev"--almost but not quite there. Now you're fully seven. I hope you stay as cute as you are at six.
