Friday, February 20 - Saturday, February 21: Extreme Busyness
This weekend was an exceptionally busy sideshow.
Friday:
3:00 - 5:30: Lucia had musical rehearsal
3:00 - 10:30pm: Greta went to a friend's house directly after school for a birthday party
7:30 - 9:30: Margo and Andrew to a neighbor's party
10:30: Pickup Greta
In the very constricted time slot I had to make dinner, I was almost done preparing linguini with clams when I asked Lucia to unload the dishwasher. The pasta was boiling in its pot; the clams were simmering in their pan. A one-cup Pyrex measuring cup was standing by to scoop up some pasta water when the time came. Lucia carried a (in retrospect, obviously too-heavy) stack of plates over to the cupboard, which is next to the stove. She somehow miscalculated where the shelf was (?) and dropped the entire stack straight down onto the measuring cup. None of the plates broke. The measuring cup, however, exploded into pieces that flew all over the stove, floor, and even onto the table. By "pieces," I mean "shards." I've never seen anything break this way. Long story short, after gazing at the mess in despair, I did what had to be done: clean it up, and dump the entire near-finished dinner in the trash, since there was a 95% certainty that glass shards were in it.
Saturday:
Day of chaos.
6:45 am: Andrew brought Lucia to school so she could catch the bus to her track meet in Edinboro.
7:10 am: Greta and I set out for Wexford, where she had an all-day erg race (40-minute drive).
8:00 am: Andrew set out for Edinboro to watch the track meet (2-hour drive).
3:00 pm: Greta and I drove home from the erg race, stopped at Panera since Greta was starving, and arrived home around 4:00.
4:30 pm: Andrew and Lucia got home. Lucia immediately began preparing for her semiformal.
6:00 pm: Pictures of Lucia inside and outside, including in the middle of the street, taking advantage of golden hour. I drove Lucia to a friend's house, where people were gathering before the semiformal. Andrew drove Greta down to Murray, where she was meeting friends for dinner and a musical at the JCC.
6:45 pm: Andrew picked up Lucia and five friends and drove them to the Heinz History Center for the semiformal (20 mins), then drove home.
7:30 pm: Andrew and I, taking advantage of a brief respite, went out for diner at La Casa Tequila.
9:00 pm: Andrew picked up Greta after the musical.
10:00 pm: Andrew picked up Lucia and two friends from the semiformal and dropped them off at another friend's house.
10:45 pm: I picked up Lucia from the friend's house.
It was the kind of day that made us very ready for Lucia to start driving.
Chaos aside, it was a good day for all. Greta had a great time at her first erg race. Lucia got a PR and came in first in her heat for the mile. She loved her semiformal dress and had lots of fun at the dance. At some point during the drive home from Wexford, Greta floated the idea of setting up a table in the basement so she could do some resin work, an idea that filled me with the same despair I felt when surveying a kitchen full of glass shards. (She agreed it was not the right day.)
