Tuesday, June 9: Mom Is a Raving Lunatic
Sometimes I feel like the kids get me--my weird humor, my inside jokes. Other times, like last night, they look at me like I am an absolute raving lunatic, and a veil drops from my eyes, and I see that I am, yes, actually a little crazy, but I absolutely won't apologize for it because I am nearly half a century old and have been through, and continue to be going through, A Lot.
Anyway. Andrew is in Peru, and the girls and I were in the basement (yes, we're still in the basement; more on that in a sec), getting ready to watch a show. Lucia was offering me and Greta an excited, extended explanation of her recent 'discovery' that she has aphantasia--she cannot form images of things in her mind. She claimed she cannot picture an apple. Etc. In response to my skepticism about a) the scientific details of this disorder and b) whether she actually has it, she just kept saying, "Do your research! Do your research!"
"You can't say that," I said. "Do your own research. You sound like a MAHA explaining why she's dosing herself with horse dewormer."
The girls looked at me, and at each other. Finally Lucia said blisteringly, witheringly, "What are you talking about?"
"You know: MAHA. The women who listen to RFK Jr and take ivermectin to cure covid."
They did not know. They did not know what MAHA was, or ivermectin. (But they did agree, in principle, that taking meds intended for veterinarians to give large mammals was unhinged.)
They have so much to learn.
Kitchen update:
Last week, we were told by one of the contractor guys that they were going to come in "like a hurricane" and get the project finished by the end of the week. Indeed, a week ago, there were about ten guys here all day, doing all the things, which makes me wonder why this "hurricane" couldn't have blown through maybe two or three months ago. The stated intention was to enable us to "reload' the kitchen over the weekend. Reader, to no one's surprise, this did not happen. More things and adjustments had to be done throughout the next week as well.
However, by last Tuesday, we were indeed able to "reload" the kitchen. Andrew left for Peru without being able to enjoy even one cup of coffee in the new space, but the girls and I have been functionally using the kitchen for a little less than a week. It is not, however, completely operational. The TV is still not hooked up (hence our continued residency in the basement for TV viewing); our toaster oven is still in the basement (driving my toast-loving kids crazy); we have not brought up all the food or spices. Lots of work remains.
But it is truly a beautiful kitchen. I'll post some pictures soon.
