Summer: Sat., 9/1 - Sun., 9/2

Sat., 9/1

Our last day on our own. We laid low at home. L&G played a lot. We read some books together. We picked up calzones from the Trattoria for dinner. We'd expected Andrew home at 6pm, but of course that didn't happen, and he ended up with a cancelled flight, a rerouted itinerary, and a later arrival at 10pm.

But the girls had been counting on seeing him, so I got them ready for bed and then we watched several episodes of The Brady Bunch, season two, which I'd gotten from the library. It was one of my favorite shows as a kid, and they're just the right age for it, at least for the first two seasons when the kids are younger. They loved it. They can't wait to watch more. For me, it was like watching people move and talk in a totally different world. The things they say! Wear! And Alice! She actually serves them coffee. Like, pours it for them, while in uniform. I watch in awe. I'm looking forward to getting to the really good Jan episodes.

Finally Andrew did get home, bearing kawaii souvenirs from Singapore and other fun things from Delhi. We were all happy. (And because one of the things he brought for the girls was a miniscule set of Rilakkuma accessories, which they loved, and because eBay exists, I have found the perfect thing for this year's Advent calendar. He answered my call for suggestions without even having read my blog! Marriage!)

Sun., 9/2

We paid the price for keeping the kids up so late because they were a hot mess of arguing and stubbornness this morning. And when I say "they," I mean "Greta." Good Lord, this child. But after lunch we drove into the city for a milestone: the girls' first Broadway show. We'd gotten tickets for Wicked, excellent seats just a few rows from the stage, and it was spectacular. We all loved it, of course. We can't wait to go to another show.

We then checked into our usual hotel, the Conrad, and then went right back out for dinner. The city was empty this weekend, and we got a perfect table at PJ Clarke's, outside by the water, looking out at the insane yachts docked there. Then we got ice cream and headed back to the hotel.

Mon., 9/3

We had a big breakfast at the hotel this morning and then headed up to the Met to see the second part of the Heavenly Bodies exhibition (we saw the other part at the Cloisters last week). Spectacular. Then we had lunch at Wagamama and went back to NJ. Our final hurrah of the summer complete.
