Summer: Sat., 6/22 - Sun., 6/23

Saturday, June 22

The glorious first true day of summer. The girls played outside all day, mostly in the tinker space, finding joy in shaving cream. They made a giant, giant, giant mess mixing their bowls of shaving cream, chalk dust, and dish soap, and then covering their hands and arms in clouds of shaving cream and running all around the yard. Andrew was taken aback by the mess but gamely helped me hose it all down.

They got a little testy with each other later in the afternoon, and there was some controversy about a bag of marbles, so I took Lucia to Target with me. We bought new beach towels and by the time we got home all was right again.

Saturday night was our annual Crab Feast, which we've been hosting every summer for the past few years. We set up tables on the patio, Andrew strung up festive new lights, and he and a neighbor picked up three dozen crabs from a place in Linden, NJ. Everyone brought a side dish and it was a festive evening as always. We always do it to coincide with Andrew's birthday, and one neighbor even brought a cake so we could sing happy birthday. It's always a fun night.

Sunday, June 23

Summer in action. I went to yoga, and Andrew made crepes for breakfast. The kids played outside. Andrew and I cleaned up from our party. After lunch, we went to the pool for the first time of the summer. L&G had so much fun. They took their deep water test right away so they could start going down the waterslides. They went from pool to pool, and I don't really have to supervise them at all anymore. They each have their own pool bag with their snacks, towel, etc, so even when they want to rest and have a snack in the grassy area they can do it on their own. Andrew and I ran into a bunch of people we know, so we could talk to them while the girls did their thing. One of Greta's friends was there so the three of them played together for a while too.

After a stop at Whole Foods, we came home and had a fried dinner outside--chicken, shrimp, sweet potatoes, onion rings, and yellow squash. Then we went across the street to our neighbor's house for a casual get-together. L&G played with a bunch of boys, running around the house with water balloons. They didn't get to bed till after 9pm, but it didn't matter because IT'S SUMMER. Best time of the year.
