Nesting Progress
After many weeks of making no progress in preparing for the baby, this weekend we made a large leap of progress and have the nursery almost finished. All but one set of curtains are now up (we mismeasured and now must return to Ikea for another curtain rod); the bookshelf is up; and the crib is ready to go. A lot of work remains, but these were the biggest parts. As usual, Andrew bore the brunt of the assembly and installation—I suspect, at this point, he may wish we could simply let the baby sleep in a simple basket in an unfurnished room. (She wouldn’t care; but we would.) But nothing fazes him, even as the boxes of things to put together seem to get bigger and bigger (the crib box was a monster).
We’ve been on a small home-improvement kick in general, and this weekend we also introduced a DVD shelf and a front-porch bench to our home. It feels like we are nesting in. And this is a good thing, since we like this house and are enjoying making it comfortable. But it is also a scary thing, since we like this house and have made it so comfortable—we are no longer at a point where we can just call two guys with a van and pack up in a moment’s notice, nor would we really want to. I guess it’s safe to say that we aren’t going to be leaving NorCal just for the sake of leaving. Perhaps that’s an obvious statement now, but for a long time it was not. We will leave; of course we will. But it will be for a job, and a place, that makes the disassembly of our nest here well worthwhile.
