Saturday, March 22 (NYC Day 3)

An incredibly full day in NYC. This morning, we took an Uber to Grand Central and had bagels for breakfast in the dining concourse. Then we took Metro North into the Bronx, to the New York Botanical Garden, to see the orchid show. It was spectacular. The theme was Mexican Modernism, and the orchids--thousands of them--were sometimes displayed against colorful walls painted purple, pink, and orange. The whole thing was amazing.

Then we hopped on a tram to get a brief tour of the rest of the garden, which was fun but also made us want to return when the flowers are in bloom. Although I went to the orchid show decades ago, when I spent a semester as an adjunct at Fordham, it's been long enough that I consider this visit today an entirely new activity.

Another new activity followed, as we made our way to the Little Italy of the Bronx and walked along Arthur Avenue. We bought biscotti at Madonia Bakery, had pizza for lunch in the central market, then went to the Morrone Pastry Shop for coffee/tea and pastries. The girls and I had enormous pieces of tiramisu. We bought cookies at Egidio Pastry Shop as well.

Then we headed back to the train station, rode Metro North back, and walked back to the hotel for a brief break.

Tonight's plan was Broadway again, and we started off with pre-theater dinner at Tre Colori. Fun as always. Our show tonight was Chicago, in honor of Lucia being in the Upper School's musical, Chicago for teens. Mom, Dad, Andrew, and I had all seen it on Broadway many many years ago and were happy to see it again. It was wonderful. And we got to see a Geibel grad perform in it, and met him at the stage door after to say hello.

Chicago is currently the longest-running show on Broadway (though not the longest-running show of all time--that's Phantom of the Opera). I like that we picked the two shows we did--Maybe Happy Ending is a brand-new show, while Chicago is a legacy. Two extremes.

The walk home was very long and late. We had some of the cookies we bought earlier in the day when we got back to our room. Then it was time for a well-deserved rest.
