Summer: Thursday 6-27-24

Last official day of work for a few days!

Lucia did a bunch of geometry first thing in the morning with Andrew, and then she and Greta went to the pond for a long time. The snapper did not make an appearance. My workday was very busy, but when it was done I read in hammocks with the girls for a long time, and Andrew even took a break to come out too. My very favorite New Hampshire activity.

The girls spent a while today exploring artifacts from an old bureau in the upstairs hallway. A medal from a Harvard regatta was one fun discovery, as well as a photo of a woman sitting outside with a rabbit snuggled up next to her and a turtle on her lap. Who is it? Is the turtle the ancestor of the snapper? What other buns were part of Andrew's family history??

While Lucia finished up her geometry later in the afternoon, Greta and I played Chinese checkers (I won three times) and gin (Greta won three times).

We went out to our favorite ice cream spot before dinner for the summer's first maple creamees (I had a Vermont maple sundae, with maple creamee ice cream, maple sugar candy, maple syrup, and whipped cream). Then, back home, while I made some dinner, Andrew got out the drone and began experimenting with it. We're going to get some amazing pictures. Farrah is terrified of it and refused to be outside while we were using it.

Andrew and Greta were sitting by the firepit tonight, well past the time that is my comfort level, when they heard significant and insistent rustling in the meadow by the driveway. They hurried inside. A creature emerged, and, when we all looked out it from the safety from the kitchen, we saw two more--maybe even more than two. It was too dark to see what the creatures were, but their shape suggested raccoons or porcupines. WILDLIFE!

The day just traipsed along. The kids are tearing through their book stacks. Tomorrow is our annual river rafting adventure--always something we look forward to.

What We're Reading:

Margo: The Night Circus

Andrew: the Erik Larson

Lucia: started and finished Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenhaller; started The Brothers Hawthorne (Inheritance Games #4)

Greta: started What We Harvest by Ann Fraistat and finished it today; started Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
