Last Day of School (2nd grade and K), Wednesday 6/20

As I've done in years past, I'll attempt to blog daily to document how we spend our summer. We have just two months before another school year begins. These days will fly by, another summer of their childhood gone in a flash. I really really love having these summer blog posts to look back on.

The past few days have been crazy busy. We went to the city for the weekend, just for fun, spending the night at the Conrad and eating at a couple of our favorite places (Wagamama for lunch, Joe's Ginger for soup dumplings). We went into a Keebler pop-up marketing event, where the girls could fill a bag with all kinds of Keebler cookies. Greta in particular was awestruck at getting these cookies "for no money!!" She talked about it for the rest of the weekend. We spent Father's Day at a Yankees game (Andrew's dream--finally getting the girls to a baseball game). We stayed for the whole game and the girls had fun. (I sat in mild terror over being hit in the face by a baseball.) Mom and Dad arrived on Monday so they could hear the girls play in their piano recital Tuesday night. Tuesday during the day was the "clap out" to celebrate the graduating second graders. It's been a lot of highly charged activity.

Today was the last day of school, with Lucia finishing 2nd grade and Greta finishing kindergarten. It was a half day, and there were no tears when they got off the bus--though Lucia had cried a lot in the previous days, anticipating saying goodbye to both her teacher and her school (she'll be at a different school for grades 3-5). When they came home I gave them small end-of-year gifts: Ring Pop Puppies and coin-collection folders for the state quarters. We spent some time looking through all the coins in the house, searching for state quarters to put into the folders. They found a lot, but still have a lot to go, which should make for a fun summer project.

Today we went to the pool in the late afternoon. Both girls took the deep water test and passed, enabling them to go on the water slides all summer. We had dinner at the pool. Back home, we read a pile of books together (Ponyella, Stella Star of the Sea, Summertime in the Big Woods, Lyle Lyle Crocodile). Then bedtime.

It always takes a day or two to get into our summer groove. Today I assumed--incorrectly--that the pool would open right when school let out; it didn't, and we got there 45 minutes before it opened. We just sat on the grass outside and passed the time. I found a four-leaf clover. We got to L in the I-went-to-the-grocery-store game.

I can feel the insanity of the end of the school year finally releasing, and I'm off to bed myself.
