Summer: Fri., 6/22 - Sun., 6/24
Weekend at Molly's! We took our first summer road trip to Bethesda this weekend to see Molly and Luca. We drove down Friday morning. L&G listened to Bill Harley stories and watched a few episodes of Just Add Magic, a new favorite. We got there in time for the kids to play in Luca's cupboard-hideout, which they loved. We ate at Molly's for dinner and then set the kids up for a slumber party in Luca's room, which didn't last too long (Luca moved into Molly's room, the girls stayed in their sleeping bags).
Saturday morning, Andrew and Molly ran in the Devil's Run charity race in Alexandria. All three kids were immersed in looking for crystal-like rocks in the park where the race started. Then they rode their scooters all around. After the runners returned, we snacked and visited with cousins, and then headed to Molly's piano studio so Molly and Andrew could shower and we could get some lunch.
Then we headed into DC, to the Natural History Museum. It was lots of fun and extremely crowded. Of all the kids, Greta is the one who wants to look at every exhibit, and it occurs to me that she would probably enjoy a trip by herself (with me) to a museum sometime, so she can look at things for as long as she wants. She was particularly mesmerized this time by the animal skeletons.
Next we walked through the National Gallery's Sculpture Garden, also lovely. Then we headed back to Molly's house, where we had &Pizza for dinner and the kids played. They were ready to collapse by bedtime but then they saw fireflies out the window, and Andrew let them go out to try to catch some before finally going to bed.
Any time we were at home, Mom was usually reading Berenstain Bears books to the kids. Molly has an impressive collection of the best vintage ones.
Sunday we tossed around the possibility of going to the National Zoo, but we decided to just stay at Molly's and relax. The kids had a blast riding their scooters up and down the street, looking for four-leaf clovers (Lucia found about five and was over the moon), and walking Zooey (this was Greta's focus, and she was in her glory). Mom and Dad left at lunchtime, and then the rest of us went to a pool with waterslides and a lazy river. So much fun.
We left from there to drive home, a long drive with lots of traffic, but we passed the time with more Bill Harley and Just Add Magic. We hadn't packed any snacks and made one stop at a rest area, where we all bought large candy bars or bags of candy. Finally we made it home.
It was a great weekend. Greta is mourning her separation from Zooey. Lucia is crowing about her four-leaf-clover power.
