Summer: Thurs., 6/21

First day of summer vacation! Greta slept till 8 and Lucia slept till 9. They just wanted to play in their rooms in the morning and set up all their Calico Critter stuff. I sewed a pillow cover. When they got hungry, we went downstairs for breakfast and read some books (Lyle Lyle Crocodile, Summertime in the Big Woods). Then we went to the library to sign up for the summer reading club. Last year--although we read a ton--they weren't all that into the reading club, which involves recording the hours you read and earning small prizes. This year, though, they're really excited about it, and were pretty determined to record a lot of reading and writing time today. Lucia's been writing a book of spells. Greta is going to keep filling out her writing journal from school. Lucia tore through the two Heidi Heckelbeck books she brought home from the library. Lately she's also been working her way through the Whatever After series. Greta found our Rainbow Fairies books in the attic (I hate these books and had deliberately hidden them) and has started trying to get through those one her own, to mixed success. She'll get there.

After lunch, one of Lucia's friends came over for a playdate. This little girl matches L&G's wild imaginations very well, and all three of them were lost in an elaborate game for a solid two hours, playing outside on the playset and down in the basement.

Then the girls had their piano lessons, watched an episode of Liv & Maddie (an astoundingly terrible show on the Disney Channel about twin teenage girls), ate dinner, and read with me on the couch (Nickle Nackle Tree, one of my faves). We're working on reading Harry Potter 2 together for our before-bed book. Lucia's already read it herself, but now we're reading it together.

A good day. Dinner was a little dicey, and by the end of Lucia's piano lesson she was yawning; they're feeling the end of the school year still.
