Summer: Sun., 7/1

Yesterday's idyll didn't last into today. The main thing was the heat: about 99. Obviously, we don't have any AC at all here. The house was okay in the morning, and we played some games, practiced piano, and read books. But the heat blasted us when we attempted a nature walk before lunch. It went south very quickly, when a gnat got into Greta's eye and she exacerbated the discomfort by rubbing her eye with sunscreeny hands. The walk became a forced march that we abandoned quickly (to Lucia's disappointment--she loves the nature hikes; we'll make sure she gets another chance tomorrow).

We melted back home, melted through lunch (more strawberries with Cool Whip miraculously helped Greta's eye), and finally melted up to William's pool, where we finally cooled off for a while. L&G had a great time swimming, esp. since the pool is full of fun pool floats like a flamingo and a unicorn.

We went out for ice cream later in the afternoon. Back at home, I read several chapters of Pippi Longstocking to the girls while Andrew (insanely) went for a run and then (again, insanely) fired up the grill for our dinner of burgers and hot dogs. We were melting by the end of dinner, and melted even more while making s'mores. The girls took cool showers before bed but by bedtime the upstairs was hot as an oven. We brought window fans with us from home, which help, but really the only thing to do is to wait until the air outside finally cools. Only now, at 10pm, is there some relief.

So, much less of a magical day than yesterday. This heat is brutal. Yesterday we were loving the summery warmth; but today the heat was at a totally different level. Once Andrew takes a break from (insanely) scraping paint from the living room wall we'll plan some cooling activities for tomorrow, which is supposed to be even hotter. Some AC-rich errands and dinner at an AC-rich restaurant are definitely in order for the late afternoon.
