Summer: Tues., 7/10

Today was one of those days when we couldn't hit our stride. I blame Andrew. L&G had fun at their art classes this morning. When they came home, they were a bit off, anticipating Andrew's imminent departure for CA. Lucia wanted to play Mancala; Greta wanted Lucia to play with Cabbage Patches; and they couldn't figure out how to get in sync. Then Andrew left, and Lucia was distraught--feeling his departure more acutely since we spent the past ten days 100% together. So that took a little while to get past.

We read a little bit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory together and then got ready for the pool. They cheered up when I suggested they each pack their own pool bag, even going so far as to prepare and pack their own snacks. They had lots of fun at the pool. We stayed at the pool until close to 5pm, then came home.

Things went awry again at home. Lucia started practicing piano, but Greta wanted to practice. Then it was Greta's turn to practice, but she didn't really want to practice. Then Lucia found an ad in a Land's End catalog that she declared worthy of possession, and of course Greta wanted it too. Lucia cut it into pieces, but Greta wanted Lucia's pieces, until she realized Lucia had given her the pieces with animals on them. And on and on. We ate dinner. There were additional pointless squabbles. It's been so long since we've had prolonged bickering like this--I'd forgotten how draining it can be. I've gotten spoiled by their usual good spirits and camaraderie.

At 7pm, I took them to the Turnover Sale. Even there, they were finding reasons to bicker, always wanting the same thing. They got over it pretty quickly, though, after Lucia found Rubik's Cubes for both of them, and Greta found a sleeping cat in a basket (the cat is made of rabbit fur) that she was wild about and Lucia (accurately) declared "creepy." They both got some books. I got a random and large assortment of zippers and fabrics for sewing projects. My sewing-supply collection is getting a bit, ahem, unwieldy. Don't tell Andrew, but I ordered a bulk lot of 60 zippers from Amazon today, as well as 10 yards of cotton twill webbing and 50 binding clips. Good thing I have the entire sunroom to use for storage. #reasonswecannevergobacktobrooklyn

That's that. One of those days. Andrew and I agreed he can no longer leave when the girls are home--he needs to leave before they wake up or while they're at school or class or whatever. Having him actually walk out the door and get into a waiting car is a feeling none of us like.

Hoping tomorrow is better.
