Summer: Thurs., 8/23 - Fri., 8/24

Yesterday was an exciting day for the girls: their first sleepover. Lucia and her friend (a year younger in school, but they got to be really good friends on the bus) have been planning this since the end of the school year, and since summer is rapidly ending, I finally made it happen. They had it all planned out: first we'd all go to the pool together, then we'd come home and have dinner and watch a movie and sleep over. And that's what we did. I drove the three girls (L + friend + G) to the pool, but the water was pretty cold and we didn't stay too long. After they had a treat from the snack bar, we came home, and they played with their American Girl dolls before we went out again to pick up a pizza. We had our dinner and then the girls settled in to watch Descendants 2, with all their dolls lined up next to them. The friend had made "popcorn" for her doll from lots of bits of crumpled-up paper. They had a brief dance party to the closing-credit music, and then they went upstairs to their sleeping bags. There was lots of giggling and playing until they finally started quieting down at 9:30. Some more playing in the morning and then the sleepover was officially over. I think they all had a great time.

In the morning yesterday, L&G and I went to the zoo to get out of the housecleaners' way--and actually ran into the sleepover friend and her mom and sister. So they got a bonus zoo-playdate before the actual sleepover-playdate. They couldn't have been more excited.

Today, after the friend left, L&G and I played Quirkle, Enchanted Forest, and Blokus. These are all great games, and I like playing them--when it's me playing with human girls. But after an interminable round of Blokus where two of the American Girls "played," and Greta's Julie doll had to pick up each piece and "hold" it in her "hand" and place it clumsily on the board, it was time to bring game time to an end. I  got the kids to go outside by suggesting they push their dolls around the driveway in their toy shopping carts.  They ran with that idea, tying the carts to their Flash Riders and zipping all around the driveway. Then they brought all of their AG stuff outside (horses, bunk beds, clothes, accessories) and set up "Funland," and were immersed in this for several hours. They had a fun day.

We read some of The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters: The Uncanny Express today and got about halfway through. We'd started reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and wanted to continue it, but the book has disappeared. I thought I had another copy, but that, too, has disappeared. Very weird. I'm sure one or both will turn up. We were just reading it on Wednesday.
