Quarantine: Sun. 3/22

Our focus today was the basement. We cleared junk off a bookshelf in the attic and brought it down to the basement so we could finally organize all the food we've purchased over the past couple of weeks. We emptied our kitchen cupboards and all the grocery bags, and created a pantry-shelf. We have a good amount of food. Our stores include fourteen packs of ramen, among more nourishing items. Not enough pasta or rice. We're ordering a chest freezer tonight so we can slowly build up more frozen meats, veggies, and fruits.

Our goal is to not go to stores at all. NYC is the eye of this storm, and we're spitting distance from the city. But staying homebound is not an easy proposition. After attempting all day to snag a delivery slot for three different grocery stores, I finally got a slot from Amazon Fresh for tomorrow. Fourteen of the items in my cart were out of stock. But between tomorrow's order and the order we ostensibly have coming from another store on Wednesday, we should be able to Chopped-basket our way into some meals. In the meantime, tonight we ordered from Domino's. Andrew left the tip at the edge of the porch, and the delivery guy left the pizzas in its place.

This is a strange time.

After we'd organized the pantry, we did a massive cleanup of the basement, and rearranged the furniture so the kids have a better place to play. Inspired by the clean space, they pulled out animal figurines and Magnatiles and played for a couple of hours. Then all four of us played Zombie Kidz. Then the girls went upstairs and played with LOL dolls while Andrew and I figured out dinner (by "figured out" I mean "decided where to order from").

Our house is looking neat as a pin. Ready for another week of--whatever. Whatever comes our way.

As I type this, our thirteen-year-old bread machine is kneading away. We're out of bread, and this is something perpetually out of stock in the online grocery stores, so I'm hoping we can Ma Ingalls this. There's no guarantee that it will work. Although I do have a brand-new jar of yeast, I found a half-full jar in the back of a cupboard, and I wanted to see if it will work even if it expired in 2017. I also rejoiced to find an unopened box of dry milk in a cupboard, required for bread machine bread and also out of stock everywhere. It expired in 2018. So: there is a lot working against this bread. If it doesn't turn out well, I'll try again tomorrow with non-ancient yeast. At the very least, maybe I'll be able to slice whatever odd loaf emerges and bake up some cracker-like snacks. CHARLES!
