Summer: Fri., 7/5 - Sat., 7/6

Friday, 7/5

The girls were up soooo late on the Fourth, but they slept in till 9-ish and we had a great day just hanging out at home. We're down to our last two days, so we tried to enjoy some of our favorite things: playing/floating in the pond, swimming in William's pool, going to our favorite ice cream spot, making fire-sticks (aka Hermione/Snape/Lupin/Harry wands) in the fire pit. It was a gorgeous day. Andrew and I sat outside at the fire pit after the kids went to bed. We haven't heard the scary crowds of howling coyotes this year (yet), so we could enjoy our dark outdoor time without the creepiness.

Saturday, 7/6

We are NOT ready to leave. Greta said repeatedly tonight that this is her home, and she doesn't want to leave. It was a hot, humid, stormy day for the most part, but we managed to squeeze in a hike to the top of Mt. Ascutney this morning before the rain started. Lucia took a nasty spill on some slippery gravel as she was exploring a large rock, and scraped up her palm, elbow, and hip. She was in tears, but she was able to calm down and we finished the hike. Her scrapes look awful, though.

We had ice cream for lunch after the hike, and ran to the hardware store for some things Andrew needed to finish his painting project, and then we spent the afternoon inside. Both girls read for a long time. Lucia logged over three hours of reading today--my Bonus Books plan is a huge success, and she's absolutely loved the past two books she's read, which of course I selected for her. Greta, too, is loving her current Bonus Book. I also read the last part of Heidi to them, our latest read-aloud. We have to choose another one now.

We all played a round of Chutes & Ladders (the most inane game known to humankind, but it's here), and then the girls played lots of Pick-Up Sticks and got well into a game of War before the rain stopped and we headed back outside.

It was six by then, and neither girl wanted to swim in the pond; they just wanted to bring their nets to the dock and catch fish. That lasted for about five minutes, and then Lucia asked if it was okay if she got her clothes wet (of course), and then both girls were swimming in their clothes. They were playing with a rotting log they found floating in the pond--it was large enough for them to stand on, and then they'd jump off and it would pop back to the surface as Lucia sang "Rise up!" from Hamilton. They named the log Alli, as in Alligator (I think). They were scream-laughing as they tried to balance on the log, and also actually screaming when the log popped up unexpectedly and they thought it was the snapping turtle. The game was freaking me out, TBH, because the log had to have been really slimy and mucky under their bare feet, but I stayed quiet of course and they had a blast.

We cleaned out the fridge for dinner. L&G roasted hot dogs over the fire pit and Andrew and I ate some leftovers. Then we had a final round of fire stick / Harry Potter spell-casting, and s'mores. Andrew and I shared some prosecco to celebrate our fantastic vacation.

And that's a wrap. We are not happy to be leaving. These days went much too fast.
