Summer: Sun., 7/21 - Mon., 7/22
Sunday, 7/21
We had to leave Connellsville. Everyone was sad. (Well, Andrew maybe wasn't, but he does do an exceptional job of putting up with all the crazy.) Greta said "I'm still sad" periodically throughout the drive. We stopped at Wawa for lunch hoagies, which was a small comfort. Also comforting was arriving home in near-100-degree temps and turning on our new AC. L&G immediately immersed themselves in the tinkerspace, and Andrew made burgers on the grill.
I had the girls choose their backpacks and ordered them (Land's End and LL Bean). It's insane to do it this early--but usually I do it even earlier, around the Fourth of July, and this year I put it off, and the style Lucia wanted was already sold out. Bad, bad mom.
Monday, 7/22
A weird day, with rain that threatened all morning and afternoon. Greta and I had dentist appointments at 8am. Lucia was still asleep when we got home at 9am (Andrew took a later train so we didn't have to drag her to the dentist with us). Then Andrew left, and the girls and I lazily decided to get out all the loose change and wrap it. They dug out their State Quarter collection folders, and we found some new states for them to add.
We went to Target for school supplies, but our Target--always terrible--was especially abysmal today. The entire school supply section had been ravaged. We found some of what we needed, but it was not pleasant, Target-magic shopping.
After lunch, we went to a better Target about fifteen minutes away and got the rest of their school stuff. (This, too, is ridiculously early BUT I've learned hard lessons in the past about not stocking up early.) They were so excited about picking things out. I still remember the excitement of shopping for my own school supplies--we always shopped at a place called Gold Circle. I always picked out really fun folders, many of them metallic.
Then we stopped at the mall because both girls wanted hand sanitizer holders to clip onto their lunch bags. They didn't want the boring $1 rubbery ones at Target, of course. They know that Bath & Body Works has very very cute ones. They each picked a pug head with a light-up unicorn horn (BBW knows its market, obvs), plus two bottles of hand sanitizer. These very strange holders were NINE DOLLARS (*shakes fist at sky in rage and confusion*), but I had a 20% off coupon, so it could have been worse. Of course only BBW-brand sanitizers fit into the BBW holders. What a racket. But the girls really wanted them and I said yes. Nice mom today.
When we got home, I read a book and the girls played in the basement, listening to Taylor Swift and doing who knows what. An Elena of Avalor singing sceptor was a key part of the game, and also the state quarter collection folders, and maybe some Legos? Not sure. Doesn't matter.
For dinner we ate meals that had been long buried in the freezer. I'm trying to clear out the freezer to make way for my New & Improved Cooking Plan for the fall, which involves actual cooking!
It stormed dramatically in the late afternoon. The girls refused to stay home while I went to pick up Andrew at the train station, terrified that lightning would strike the house or that we'd lose power. Fair enough. So we all went out in the downpour to get Andrew.
We managed to practice piano for the second time all summer. Then Greta took a shower and, instead of reading, Lucia emptied her desk of all papers (there are STACKS of papers) and decided to cull the trash from the treasure and organize everything. Needless to say, she has a huge amount of de-bombing to do in her room tomorrow. Sigh.
