Summer: Sun., 8/18 (NH) - Tues., 8/20
Sunday, 8/18 (NH)
A long leisurely day in NH. It was chilly and foggy in the morning, a good morning for sleeping in (which the kids did). Then they got out the old play kitchen from the garage and played with that for a long long time. They collected crab apples from the tree at the bottom of the yard, along with a variety of berries, and cooked up lots of meals and drinks. They were completely absorbed. This is my favorite kind of playing, and the one I feel is most at risk this year, when I know both girls are going to encounter a lot of other kids who are old beyond their years and who have cast off toys and playing in favor. Ugh. I could go on and on about this and work myself into a froth, but I won't. For now.
Anyhoo. At lunchtime, our cousins Peter and Sandy drove up from MA for lunch and a visit with us and Robert and Andy. We usually see them once a year and always have a fun time. Sandy brought me a new deck of tarot cards, the Rust Belt Arcana, which aligns traditional tarot imagery and symbolism with flora and fauna from the industrial Midwest. Beautiful. She also brought a box of Littell family historical ephemera, including original land grants from the 1200s, complete with wax seals. It's an overwhelming collection. Andrew's going to have months of things to go through.
Peter and Sandy brought their dog, Emerson, with them, and Greta was in her glory, walking around with him and even lying on him as a pillow. He's a giant dog, but a gentle soul and very calm.
We went to William's pool for a quick swim in the late afternoon. Emerson hung out even after Sandy went back to the house, and we drove him home in our trunk--a little foreshadowing of lots of other dog-in-the-trunk car rides.
After our visitors left, Andy made a corn and potato chowder, and then we went to our favorite ice cream place.
It was much too short of a NH trip. We leave Monday. We were just getting started.
Monday, 8/19 (NH)
We spent the morning packing up and getting in one last float in the pond. We left after lunch and drove back to NJ. None of us were ready to leave. We needed another week.
Tuesday, 8/20
Seizing the last two weeks of summer by both hands. The girls slept late this morning. Lucia had a math tutoring session with her beloved third-grade teacher (just to review concepts to prepare for fourth-grade math). In the afternoon we went to the pool for a long time. Back home, they played with the tinker space, and did perler beads. I made eggplant parmesan for dinner. I also registered our future puppy for puppy kindergarten.
