Summer: Wed., 8/21 (Greta's City Day)

Greta's city day! Months ago, the girls and I decided we'd plan two city days this summer--one with just Greta and me, and one with just Lucia and me. The end of summer crept up on us so fast, but we made it happen. The girls decided Greta would go first.

This morning, all four of us rode in on the train together. Lucia had a backpack full of activities (books, coloring, yarn for finger knitting) so she could spend the day in Andrew's office while he worked. At Penn Station, we split up--Andrew and Lucia onto the subway to get to Google, Greta and I out of the station to walk a few blocks to the F train.

Our first destination was the Lower East Side, where we had a pastry at the Clinton St. Baking Co. and then went to Greta's choice of activity: Koneko, a Japanese cat cafe. This was an awesome cat cafe. There were two floors of cat areas, and an outdoor "catio" where most of the cats congregated. The price of admission bought us an hour of petting and playing with the cats. Greta was in heaven, especially when one of the kittens began cuddling up to her and licking her hand. It was lots of fun. We managed to leave without adopting a cat, but it was touch and go there for a bit at the end, when Greta began kissing all the cats and saying she didn't want to leave.

We stopped at Economy Candy on our way back to the subway, where Greta bought some giant Smarties and a pack of Juicy Fruit gum for Lucia.

Next we headed to the Madison Square Park area and had lunch at Wagamana (Greta's choice). Greta wanted ramen--NOT from the kids' menu. She wanted the adult-size portion. It was her day, so the adult portion it was. I also got the ramen. We had duck gyoza as well. All delicious.

After lunch, we went to Flying Tiger, where Greta picked out five fun things. It was her idea to also buy one thing for Lucia--they planned this on the train into the city, that they'd each pick out one thing for the other when they were at Flying Tiger. Super cute. Greta bought a giant eraser, a giant highlighter marker, a set of music-themed take-apart erasers, a small shopping cart for her Mailegs, and a cat-face zippered pouch.

Our final stop of the day: a Mister Softee truck for ice cream, which we ate on a bench in Madison Square Park. Then it was back to the subway and up to Penn, where we met up with Andrew and Lucia and headed home.

It was a great day. Very very hot but otherwise excellent. Just the right selection of activities, tailored to Greta's most-loved things, cats and noodle soup and Flying Tiger. Lucia had fun with Andrew--she read a lot while he was in meetings, but he also took her to lunch in a Google cafe and out for ice cream and to the Google game room.
