Summer: Wed., 7/31 (Cape May)
A great beach day. We have the logistics down now. I got up at 6:30am, but instead of setting off on my regular morning bike ride, I rode to our parked car, attached the bike to the bike rack, drove to an ideal parking spot close to Cove Beach, and then set out on my bike ride from there. We never even unloaded the beach stuff from the car last night, so we were all set. Around 9am, Andrew walked to the car, unloaded the canopy and chairs, set them up, and then went on his run. Then Molly, the kids, and I biked to the beach to meet him around 10am. Mom and Dad walked. Seamless.
The beach weather was perfect, the water was beautiful, the tide was low. We all swam. The kids were very focused on sand today: Greta worked for a long time on her "spa," a large hole she dug near the waterline that filled pleasingly with water; Luca and Lucia worked on a very deep hole farther back.
We had lunch from our cooler. The kids snacked a lot. Andrew and I played paddle ball and got up to 63. Lucia and Andrew got up to 23.
Around 3pm, Jeremy arrived, joining us for the remainder of the week. We packed up and headed home around 3:30 so we could all shower and change before dinner.
Dinner tonight was our annual crab feast, a tradition Andrew has spearheaded for the past couple of years of our beach trips. This time we went to a place called H&H Seafood, and sat outside at a large picnic table. We ordered two dozen crabs and a variety of sides. They were delicious. Everyone ate crabs except for Jeremy, a vegan, who looked on with horror and repulsion. The restaurant is at a marina, so when the kids were finished eating Jeremy took them on a walk to see the boats etc.
We drove home after that, parked the cars, and then did a little shopping to buy the kids Cape May baseball hats. (The girls' scalps are getting sunburned.) Then the kids and Dad got ice cream at Kohr's, and Mom, Andrew, and I got ice cream sandwiches at Peace Pie.
Once the kids were in bed, the adults played another game of Code Names. There's also a puzzle ongoing on the dining room table.
