Summer: Tues. 6/30 - Wed. 7/1

We're in NH! And because we have no obligations anywhere specific, we're planning to stay awhile. We drove in yesterday and spent the afternoon unpacking, getting groceries, etc. It's nice to be able to settle in.

Today was Farrah's first birthday! One year old. She is such a little sweetie. I made her an apple cake, and we sang and gave her a few presents (new tennis balls, a plush cake toy, a pack of bully sticks). We got her at eight weeks, so we haven't even had her for a full year. She's still just a pup.

Farrah seems uneasier here than she was in May. I don't know if she senses or smells a creature outside, or if it's just unfamiliar. She does not seem as wildly adventurous as she was last time. Maybe she just needs a little time to acclimate. She also refuses to go outside after dark--she's terrified. We hadn't taken her out for hours tonight, though, so we had to carry her outside after the kids went to bed so she could pee at least once before the evening went on.

The kids played at the pond this morning, getting in while wearing their clothes, of course. They floated their Lego girls on lilypad leaves. After lunch, the three of us set out for the creek, hoping to swim in the swimming hole. It got progressively gloomier as we walked down the road, however, and we were only in the creek for a few minutes before it began to pour. We were pretty protected in the woods, but the temperature dropped and we were getting wet as the rain came down harder. We huddled by a tree, wrapped in the towels we'd brought, giggling and shivering. Then we saw a car pull to a stop at the top of the ravine--Andrew and Farrah had driven down the road to rescue us. The girls talked about the rescue for the rest of the day.

We saw a small orange salamander in the woods, which--thanks to a New England field guide I bought before our trip--we now know is called a Red Eft.

Sadly, the farm where we pick strawberries every year is closed, so this year there will be no strawberry picking. But we got fresh strawberries from a farm nearby, enough to have many bowls of strawberries and Cool Whip and for me to make my annual batch of jam.

Dinner tonight was a fried dinner--zucchini, eggplant, onion rings, and chicken tenders.
